Wrapped in Pallets

Robert Whyte from Deep Creek Community Church in Punta Gorda, FL brings us this stage design wrapped in wooden pallets. (Originally posted February 2013)

Their December series was called “Christmas Restoration” – all about restoring Christmas to its original meaning. He wanted the stage to look like the inside of a barn – hinting at a manger without being cheesy.

The seven 10-foot tall wood pallets along the back wall were donated by a local cabinetry company. Robert attached them to a wood frame and secured them about 8-feet off the back wall. Then he picked up the ten 4-foot pallets from a local carpet shop that he mounted straight to the side walls. (Most companies have pallets that they are just willing to give away for free because they have a hard time disposing of them.)

He also attached smaller pallets called “kickers” to the front of their band platforms to give some depth to the stage. He picked up ten construction lights from Home Depot and stripped off the silver casing to leave just the socket. He hung the sockets from the back wall at various lengths and put 40w bulbs in them to give them a warm glow. Robert hooked them up to a dimmer pack behind the pallets so that he could control and chase them during songs to give movement. The lights cost about $7 each.

He also wanted to include Christmas trees on the stage, but he didn’t want it to become overly glitzy because of the series and design. So he went with all white lights on the trees and red and gold ornaments. They then added brown tool and burlap as a garland to pull in the vintage touch and added burlap tree skirts. Robert added white lights and garland to the top of the 4-foot pallets on the side walls as well as the ones masking the bands platforms.

Finally he used seven Elation RGB LEDs to light the center pallet wall.

The set cost roughly $200 because of the light sockets and all the Christmas lights.
