Throwback: Waves to the World

Josh Scott from Midland Evangelical Free Church in Midland, MI brings us this stage design for a series on taking Christ to the nations. (Originally posted March 2014)

While attending Gurus, they saw a picture of a design that had the same circle shape with slats in Willows Creek’s scene shop. The large arcs were made out of styrofoam. The horizontal slats were luan fastened to a wood frame made out of 2x4s. The center screen was a trampoline frame with polystretch fabric. One of their volunteers made a pocket like would be on the hood of a hoodie sweat shirt to pull it tight on the frame.

You can’t see it in the pictures but the wood was painted with a 3 parts water to 1 part blue paint to make it look like a blue stain. For the Christmas season and their Christmas concert with Denver and the Mile high orchestra they painted the slats white and the arcs silver and gold. They used ProPresenter with a TripleHead2Go to do the projection.

    So nice!!

  2. Kevin says:

Looks great! What projectors are you using?

    • Josh Scott says:

Sorry I didn’t check this sooner. We used two 5,000 lumen epson projectors for the slats. The center was a 7,000 lumen Eiki. It is what we had, we easily could have done the whole thing with 3 5,000 lumen projectors. If you look at the picture of Africa you see I couldn’t get the colors to match between the two types of projectors.

This is so cool. I love this design! Our sanctuary couldn’t fit something quite like this in it, but this is full of inspiring content.

  4. I really dig this! Very well done!

How high and what was the distance of the projectors from the screens?
    Thanks

Hey really curios on how you guys formated the image to come out in a circular display?

    • Josh says:

We used three projectors that are really projecting a rectangle. I created a photoshop file to create a mask for pro presenter. Essentially it is an image that projects black everywhere I don’t want the image to go. Pro presenter allows you to overlay a mask on the output.
