Throwback: Vent Your Frustrations

Lisa Masteller at C3 Church in Clayton, NC brings us this extremely inexpensive stage design.

Walking down the aisles of Home Depot with a budget of around $250 she struck upon this great idea.

Using 4′ x 4′ air vent grills she assembled this grid-based stage backdrop. Starting with a dark color, she spray painted the grills, then she faux-finished them with alternating colors that would compliment the on-screen visuals.

To mount this grid wall she had some guys fabricate a 36′ frame made from 2×2 boards. She then hung small chain on hooks from the frame and connected each grill. The columns of grills hung freely. (Unfortunately they turned a bit too because of the AC in the room.)

So there you go! Take this idea, make it yours, or go strolling through your local Lowes or Home Depot and come up with your own stage backdrop masterpiece.

I love this idea. I am going to run with it! Of course, I will change some color and texture likely but I love the cost budget. I believe this is Matt Fry’s church. Went there last year for the All Access 2009 Conference. Really incredible work, Lisa:)

I actually have just finished a project just like this (inspired by this post). Thanks so much for the idea.

Was this done with metal grates or filters? I am having a hard time finding metal grates in this size. Also how were the chains connected to the grates?

      Thanks so much

Just thinking that you could take this even further using “filters” – spray painted – hook with fishing line – a lot lighter in weigh although blowing from AC could be an issue/concern.

Really like this design. A couple pieces of fishing line strung vertically behind each column of vents would stop them from spinning.
