Stage Designs

Two for One Special

Rik Hedlund from Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, Arkansas brings us these two different stages using the same materials. It’s a two for one special!

This design was a simple build using ceiling fluorescent light diffusion panels and some wooden frames. They were lit using cheap American DJ punch lights attached to the inside of the frame. They used a black curtain to get a good contrast to the panels, and left the brick wall in the other venue. To give the bricks a bit of texture they lit them from the bottom behind the panels. Overall the price on these sets was $300 worth of materials, and $1500-$2000 for the American DJ lights per room.

To curve the fluorescent panels in the first venue they built a rectangle with 1×2’s and sandwiched the panels in on the sides with two more 1×2’s. To keep the fluorescent light panels from cracking when he bent them, Rik drilled pilot holes in them.

THIS IS AWESOME! I really dig this design. I’ll have to try this one too. As always, thanks for sharing.

  2. Cool!

I like the look of these, but my experience with plastic lenses like these are that they’re pretty brittle. What do you mean by “pilot holes”? How did that help? Even in the store when new, these are often already cracked!

Are there other similar materials that bend better? Coroplast isn’t quite translucent enough, I don’t think…
