Throwback: Triangulation

Dale Kline and Ben Mack from Lifesong Church in Sutton, MA brings us this stage design for their spring look. (Originally posted September 2014)

Dale and Ben wanted to replicate a look they saw from a photograph from Saddleback Church in CA. The photo was of Saddleback’s platform where they utilized some triangles/geometric shapes to create a backdrop behind their stage. With a little brainstorming on what medium to use, Dale and Ben decided to use fabric and paint to replicate a similar look.

Creating Triangles

They first purchased a 120 ft (40 yd) roll of plain white fabric from a local fabric store. The fabric was 4ft wide x 120 ft long. Next, they create (4) 20 ft long strips to bookend their projection screen, and then create (6) strips with the remaining fabric for below the screen. After creating the strips of fabric, they marked off square foot sections along each length so that the design would be made up of right triangles. After marking off the sections, Dale and Ben used painters tape and paper to create the triangles (leveraging negative space) in each square section. They were intentional about not using any pattern so that it would create a random patterned look.

After blocking off each strip of fabric, they spray painted over the fabric that was not blocked off. The result was a contrast in white and gray triangles throughout the design. The team secured the fabric seams together using gaffers tape which required them to make adjustments along the way. The total cost for this design was under $150.

These guys rock, amazing imagination and dedicated to making Sunday be the best day of my week. Worship would not be the same without their backstage talent and team.

What kind of cloth did you use? Did you light from behind as well? Thank you! Great look!

    Hello!
I am from local church in Poland. 2 weeks ago our church have got a gift- it is our own building – it was old factory. We want to make all things new and are planning to make a stage just like this triangulation template. We love it! And we would like to know how to build it step by step. Could you send me more tips about lighting and materials used to done it? Our stage have 3 for 6 meters so it will be much smaller. the time is running because because we have to leave our old place till 25th of september. God bless you! and i am waiting forward to hear you!
