Stage Designs

The Art Scene

Mike from Word Of Grace Community Church in Sheboygan Falls, WI brings us this pop art stage design.

Mike wanted to avoid the ever-so-easy square stage elements. So he went with circles.

He used 363 soda cans in this design. He cut the cans with a jig he built, a chop saw, and a trusty pair of safety glasses. After he cut the cans he attached them to a strip of 3/4 x 3/4-inch wood with a pin nailer. Then he attached that to another strip to create a grid. To accent the cans he painted 3 foot by 3 foot pieces of plywood with a “circle-y” design. Then he framed it all with 1×4’s and painted them to match.

The lighting consisted of purple and red gels on the pieces of plywood and clear lights on the cans and hanging circles. The clear lights needed to be dimmed on the cans – it would’ve been too bright otherwise.

Cost: about $70.
