Stuck in the Corner

Mike TenHaken from Word Of Grace Community Church in Sheboygan Falls, WI brings us this really cool lobby display item. And while it isn’t technically a stage design, it definitely belongs here.

They made this sign using white Coropalast and 1-inch pieces of poplar wood. They drew each letter first on the Coroplast to the proper dimensions and proportions. Then they framed the Coroplast letter with strips of poplar – which included a saw cut in it to slide the Coroplast into. They did each letter this way as well as a back half that created the 3-d look.

Mike then cut two 2×4’s and attached them to the back and created an “L” shape to fit in the corner. Each letter resembled an open box from the back where a 4w LED lightbulb was attached to the 2×4.

Each lightbulb was screwed into a simple ceiling bulb fixture and wired together. The lightbulbs were operated with a remote control which could create simple light patterns or basic colors.

The whole thing cost about $300.

  1. Very cool, simple idea. Thanks for including it, as it certainly has stage-esque applications.

Where did you get the lightbulbs for this?

Nice craftsmanship! You even made the tops look nice, making them useful and still appealing from a higher viewing angle in the future…

Ben, the lightbulbs were purchased on ebay. Look for 4 watt LED lightbulb. They retail at about $27 but I found them on ebay for $8 brand new. Each bulb comes with its own remote. They can be programmed to fade, strobe, flash, gradient and solid in about 20 different colors.

Simple with a punch. What a nice effect when you jam it in a corner and light it up.

DO YOU HAVE A BLUEPRINT OR DIAGRAM OF HOW TO PUT THE LETTERS AND BOXES TOGETHER?
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

  6. Elliot says:

What are the dimensions for some of the letters?
