Sam McGovern from Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos, California brings us this stage design that’s so fresh and so clean. (Originally posted October 2011)
Sam and his team started by collecting 30 Ikea end tables they had from previous events. They stacked them up and covered the backs with a sheet of plywood that they mounted lightbulbs on. They masked the inside of the end tables with fabric to get the lightbox effect.
The center panels were a hi-res picture of a watercolor painting that they enlarged to 16×8 feet. A family in their church agreed to print the image on foam-core for free (they owned a print shop). Then they hung the panels from thin strips of wood that went across the tops of the lamp towers.
By using left overs and freebies, they were able to spend $250 at Home Depot to pull this set together.
Nice job Sam! Not only are you a great sound engineer, you do great design work!
Excellent Sam, another of your many talents
Did you hot glue material on inside of tables.
This is a great look. Did you have the watercolor painting to take a picture of? Or did you find it somewhere online?
I’d also like to see this without all the LED lights on it.
What Fabric did you use? i just started redesigning our stage and I am Looking for that look of Fabric.
Couple Questions – 1. the photos – are they printed with a color or as a grey tone and then lighted from above? – What size are the pictures, are they matte finish? 2. how are you lighting each box and do they change colors.
thanks – i luv it – great.
Is there any way to get a copy of the painting that was photographed for the panels? My Senior Pastor wants to do this design.
Looks great! How is this lit? Front, back or from above?
Wow that is nice work. Great look. Planning on “upgrading” our columns with a look like this soon.
Also, I am looking for this exact same Podium that is in the picture. Have searched several “Podium Sales” sites, but have not seen this version. Where was it purchased.
Thanks
Hey Mike,
I worked at Venture when we purchased that podium. It is a little pricey but a really nice/clean design. It has a good weighted base and is sturdy for such a minimalist look. Here is a link to the company.

Thanks. I think we are working toward picking one of those up.
Probably a shot in the dark here since its been a while from the original post date…but…What size light bulbs were used in the stacks of tables?
