Grant Morgan from Whittier Area Community Church in Whittier, CA brings us these delicious circles adorning their stage walls. (Originally posted January 2013)
They got their inspiration from a window display at Anthropologie. They used 8×4-foot Masonite panels cut into 5-inch strips. This size of strip had enough depth to be seen throughout the room, but enough strength to be bent into the circle shapes.
With help from Jason Lentz and Josh Mervin they were able to cut, paint, drill, and form the hoops (took almost one whole day).
After the hoops were formed they started attaching them to the wall on the back of their stage. They wanted as much depth as they could get but also wanted the lights to hit them well.
hey, guys, could we get some more detailed instructions? where you got the supplies, how you hung it, what kind of paint you used, etc? looks cool and we would LOVE to do it, but… i don’t get it LOL
Hey Rachel- I have a little more detail at my church’s creative arts blog. check it out and if you still need more information let me know and I can talk you through some of it! http://wacccreativearts.com/2011/05/26/new-stage-design/
Is the site down? Or a bad link? I couldn’t get it to load today, even when backing up to “waccreativearts.com”. :(
Hey Debbie,
I don’t know what the issue was. You can always search for wacc creative arts and find it that way! wacccreativearts.com
Hey guys. Trying to do this idea as part of our stage design. My problem? Finding material that will bend. I got Masonite and it didn’t look like your photo and broke in half. I’m out of options. Any suggestions? What was the thickness? 8 ft x 5″ correct?
Nate- that is correct. I’m not sure if there is different size Masonite but that is what we used. The Masonite I used had one side that was a white finish.
Morgan I really love this. Can I have the details, the materials, how u put it together….I would like to do it for my church. Thks. Irene.
Hey Irene,
Check out the link that I posted earlier in the comments, there’s a little more detail there.
I used small nuts and bolts to hold them together through pre-drilled holes in the masonite.
We hung them on screws that were drilled into the wall, I found some foot long screws that stuck out far enough to give them the depth that we wanted. I used a circular saw to cut the masonite into the size strips we wanted and then painted some of the sides either green or orange.
I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions feel free to email me.
This is super cool. Love the depth it brings and it lights up well. Fantastic job!
you didn.t say how thick the panels were…1/4″???
