Nick Hill from Xperience Church in Defiance, Ohio brings us this portable stage design. (originally posted January 2016)
This stage design was inspired by the artwork on the newest Hillsong United Album, Empires, and it was really easy and cost effective to do. They have metal frames that they use to attach most of their stage designs to since they’re a portable church. They have 2 six foot frames and 4 five foot frames. Nick knew they wanted to use strips of Coroplast to give the effect but they needed a way to attach them to the frames and also provide a back to them so you couldn’t see through them. So they had a seamstress in the church sew felt slip covers for the six frames, which cost them less than $30 because they found felt on sale. Next they took Coroplast and cut strips 2″ wide. They spaced them 1″ apart on the frames. They used velcro to attach the Coroplast strips to the felt on the frames. Then they used megabars to light them as well. They were able to construct this whole set for less than $50 and only used 1 (4×8) sheet of Coroplast.
What light fixtures did you use in the middle? The Conventional looking ones?
The lights in the middle are our DIY blinder lights. They are 10″ work lamps purchased from Lowes and then we purchased half chrome bulbs from Amazon. Here is a link to the lights bulbs. http://www.amazon.com/Bulbrite-60A19HM-Half-Chrome-Shape/dp/B00GBNYXLM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453990273&sr=8-1&keywords=bulbrite+A-19+half+chrome
The work lights are attached to 2 wood poles on a base. The work lights are then plugged into a power strip that is plugged into a dimmer switch so we can control the intensity of them. If you have any questions or work like any pictures let me know and I can email them to you.
Love these! Want to build something similar for a summer camp stage design. Can you give me a few more specs on the DIY blinders? Thanks!
I made some of these last month and can give you some detailed pics. I just took a 1×8 and cut holes in it and ran the cords through to the back. Used some cable staples to neatly arrange the cords and then plugged them into a powerstrip. The bulbs linked here were WAY too bright for our sanctuary (~120ppl) so we had to use some lower wattage bulbs and a dimmer switch. Email me if you need some pics.
TJ
Hey TJ! Can’t believe I missed your reply. That would be really helpful if you’d be willing to send some pics and any building tips. I don’t have your email, but mine is danielheffingtonmusic@gmail.com
Thanks!
Would you mind emailing me some pics of how you made you blinders and frames. Also how they are set-up. I would really appreciate it.
What kind of lights did yall use? I am just getting started and need to buy some light on a budget.
The lights that are lighting the panels are American DJ 5P Hex lights. Here is a link to them at Sweetwater. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/5PHex If you have any other questions let me know.
First off great design. I was wondering what kind of light bars did you use? Are they the 252 led light bars or the 320 led light bars? Your answer is great appreciated.
What type of metal frames did you use? Were these built or purchased? Where were they purchased from or how how were they built? Thanks so much!
Where did you get your Coroplast. Any place locally I can find is charging $30 per sheet.

Sorry, didn’t mean to duplicate post.
How are the lights setup behind the stands/fabric? Do you have any pictures on the lights sitting behind the fabric?
Hey Nick! Do you have any pictures of the stands themselves without the cover or anything? Also, did you guys build them yourselves or purchase them?
2 questions. 1. How wide are they? I’m guessing 3 feet? 2. Approximately how much fabric was used to cover these?
Great set man! Any tips on cutting the coroplast quick and straight? Thanks
We use a “Coro-Claw” it’s a coroplast cutter sold by http://www.sawtrax.com. They are amazing…couldn’t live without it!
Thanks for the tip, mine arrived yesterday and it saved me SO much time!
Hi Nick! May I know what lights are you using for the green lights?
Did you buy the metal frames or build them? Where did you buy them or how did you build them?
Would you mind emailing me some pics of how you made you blinders and frames. Also how they are set-up. I would really appreciate it.
Still waiting for the answer on the metal frames. Can you tell us if you made them or bought them? If so, how did you make them or where did you buy them from? Thanks!
I would like measurements on frames please and pics w/o cloth. I was thinking of using metal across the frame instead of cloth. Also are work lights the metal ones with clamp on back?
Hey Nick, would you have any info on the frames?
This is very beautiful.
You said it is portable, can you design this for us and we pay for it.
My friend is starting a fellowship in her apartment.Doing research for her,she needs a background
Thank you so much.
