Stage Designs

Nighttime Honeycomb

Rotimi Babalogbon from Global Impact Church in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria brings us this cool hollow back wall that allowed backlighting and star light spots. (originally posted May 2015)

The set was built mainly with wood and plexiglass (perspex). They had to board the entire wall to create evenness, then they painted the new wall black before cutting out the openings with the backlit elements.

They bore a number of holes for the recessed lights and cut out grooves for the the lit panels which they backlit with utility flood lights (this was before Nigerians could easily order LEDs online).

The lighting behind the set was wired to the dimmer so they could be dimmed from the multimedia control booth.

The recessed lights were capped with two different colors, orange and blue, to color them and reduce lens flare on the cameras.

The greatest challenge was adjusting the stage lights to light the subjects on stage without whitening the black base of the set. They had to redistribute the stage lights and install 6 new fresnels close to the stage. They also ran some fancy lighting into the trusses for effect and made some DIY truss sleeves.

Total budget for the design was N1,600,000 which back then was like $10,000. This amount covered the lights purchased and redesign plus professional fees, etc.
