Lined Mountains

Johnny Ragin from Stonecreek Church in Milton, GA brings us this great use of LED strips. (Originally posted December 2014)

This was a set that Johnny recently designed after finding some great LED strips on Amazon that he was able to modify to be DMX controllable. They were doing a series on Genesis and creation, so they went with a mountain theme to fit that. The three mountain pieces were made of insulation sheathing which comes in 4 x 8 foot sheets and is a lot cheaper and lighter than plywood. They were built on frames made of 2×4 boards. He outlined the sides of the mountains with the LED strips and used aluminum tape to make horizontal lines that would be reflective as they shined other lights on the mountains. For the straight vertical lights on the backdrop, they cut ten 16 foot 1×1 boards and painted them black and just ran a single LED strip down each one. They were mounted to another horizontal board that they suspended from the ceiling. Additionally, they put 24 strands of Christmas lights behind their white drape so they could turn them on and have the light diffuse through the curtain. They pulled this off with a total budget of $800.

Great design! How were you able to modify the strips to be controlled over DMX?

Do you have any video of your set in action? It looks really dynamic and I’d love to see more of it.
I am also curious about how you modified the strips to be dmx-able. Please share.

    Hey Guys,

I cant speak for how Johnny and his team use these LED strips with DMX. However, we use the same LED strips at our church and we control them via this part http://www.environmentallights.com/14828-dmx-24-2000s.html. We are super happy with the results of these strips. For the price they definitely cant be beat.

    Great set design guys!

@Nick, you said you’re using these same strips with the controller you linked to, are you getting 16 sets from one decoder? (2 per channel on the 8ch decoder)

  7. Ben says:

Hey Guys, How many strips would you suggest buying to duplicate something like this?
