Light Top Bars

Josh Collesano from Woodside Bible Church in Troy, MI brings us these upright bars lit on top. (Originally posted July 2014)

At Woodside, they create both a Good Friday experience and an Easter weekend experience. They have completely different atmospheres for both. They knew that making two completely different sets was not an option. They needed the look to be able to transform. Enter Kraft Tubes. They hid the Easter version of the look underneath tubes painted flat black. After Good Friday, they simply removed the bulb, the tube, then screwed the bulb back in. This revealed the gradiented neon PVC tubes underneath.

To make the look they used:

  • 1” schedule 40 PVC pipe
  • Kraft/shipping tubes
  • 1/2” wood for bases/decks
  • Standard incandescent 40w light bulbs
  • Neon spray paint

They had a two person team that cut all of the PVC (over 500’) to length and drilled the pilot holes for wiring. They had a separate team of 6 that pre-wired each socket and wiring whip.

Each base held 14 lights and the wiring was hidden underneath.

    Looks Awesome!
How did you guys make the bases? what is the pvc tube actually sitting in at the base?

    • Josh says:

      Hey Danny,
The bases where made of wood (see the B/W pictures for some close ups). PVC couplers where glued into the bottom of the bases flush with the top of the base as to not show. The colored PVC sticks where simply inserted into the PVC couplers which where glued into the bases.

If you click the link to my original blog post there should be a link to a Google Doc which shows some of where we got the resources. The sockets should be in that list. We purchased them in bulk online.

Hi Josh! the blog link doesn’t look like it exists anymore, do you have that info anywhere else?

  3. Danny Sena says:

Also, can you post a link to where you guys got those sockets?
