Matt Ludik from Grace Family Church in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban brings us this “Faith, Hope, and Love” stage design.
They made this quick recycled set design out of elements left over from their Christmas set in 2010. For their series “Faith, Hope & Love” they made a wall of letters built from scraps of the polystyrene (styrofoam) lettering last used in their build up to Christmas 2 years ago.
They built a home-made styrofoam cutter to get the most out of their leftover lettering. Then they glued everything together, and air-brushed the key words in red!
They added some lightbulbs for a little extra drama.
The cost of the set was zero—no matter what currency you’re using.
Looks awesome!
I love the styrofoam cutter. How did you guys make that?
Love it – but how did you make such clean lines in the foam? I see the hot wire there, but someone must be truly gifted in using it! Well done!
Would love directions for making the hot knife, please? Great job cutting!
Hey Guys.
Thanks for the comments!
Our ‘hot-wire’ foam cutter was made using a 12v power supply (2A) and nickel-plated wire, although I have seen normal steel guitar string work just as well.
The base was a left-over piece of ‘formica’ – the laminated wood used for economical kitchen countertops.
There are several useful ‘how-to’ videos on YouTube. Some people seem to have success using car battery chargers, at lower voltage and higher currents…
Good luck!
What size foam did you use and where did you get it?
