Don’t Crumple Me!

“Oh the humanity!” screamed the onlookers as the set was crushed and contorted. It was a dark day for window screening…but a great day for stage design!

Steven Hall brings us this set design for a special acoustic concert featuring Sanctus Real at Northland Church in Longwood, FL. The set was adapted from one used by Anne Militello for the Decemberists. The back drop is Aluminum Window Screening that was zipped tied together every 6 inches at the seams.

Once made into a solid drop, they crushed and contorted the mesh until it looked very dimensional. They used some conventional striplights and 6 Studio Color 575s to light the backdrop. The whole backdrop (screens) cost less than $150 (at Lowe’s) and took an afternoon to set up. Pretty cool, huh?

That is pretty sweet. I looked into renting a similar effect. It was about $2000 a week. This is much cheaper and even customizable. I see some shopping for window screening in my near future!

    Again, nice work!

what color was the screening? they make black, charcoal, "brite" or "bright" (seems like a natural aluminum color)), etc… perhaps the bright? thanks!

  3. Steven Hall says:

The window screening I used was the bright silver. Make sure to use the Aluminum screening (metal), because it gives it the reflectivity. The plastic stuff doesn't work as well. Just a heads up Lowes has some 25 ft. rolls that seem to be the best deal.

I love it. Do you have a black curtain behind the screen? Do you think you would get the same look if you hung the screen in front of a white wall with lights shining on the front of the screen or would you see through the screen to the wall?

    Scott,

I actually hung a white cyc behind the screen as well. It worked out pretty well, It looked a little less dimensional, but it did work well.

    Yoel,

I will be in touch with you soon.

Sorry about the delay guys. Thanks for all the work you do for the kingdom!

FYI, Home Depot's website carries 30in by 100ft roll of Aluminum Screen for around $50 (and free shipping). I am considering trying something similar in our worship center. Thanks for the idea!!
