Check out this city skyline from Oasis Church in Los Angeles, California. (originally posted March 2011)
Glendale Matias brings us this stage set they used for Christmas. Their theme was giving back to the city.
To illustrate this, they thought of parachuting thousands of gifts to the city. They peppered the front lobby with this concept and extended it into the sanctuary with a silhouette stage piece of the city. They targeted specific landmarks in the skyline and poked LED Christmas lights through white foam-core stage flats. The parachutes gift boxes were constructed using regular gift boxes, kraft string and inverted food trays. Additional decoration was stamping the Christmas logo (Christmas in LA) on Christmas ornaments. They also built a wooden ‘skin’ column in the lobby to continue the theme inside. Dimensions of Stage – 8-14′ high by 60′ wide.
This was so incredible! They successfully portrayed what the goal was.
I love our Visual Arts Team :)

Would love to know how you did the city scape. I am wanting to do a city like this as the backdrop for our Mission Possible vbs if you have the time to respond with how you did it would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!
Hi Brittany!
The city scape was huge! We used 4×8 sheets of white foamcore. We used a vector drawing program (illustrator) to draw the city scape. Once we had the correct skyline, the drawing was scaled to fit the size of the stage (Approximately 40 feet). Then we used 4×8 sheets of white foamcore braced with thin 1×2 strips of wood. Each section of foamcore either had a skyline pattern or just a solid sheet (solid sheets where used on the bottom so we can get height…the very top of the skyline was about 11-12 feet). Once everything was built, we poked LED christmas lights through it for the window pattern. It was really messy in the back, but the front looked great. I have plans of everything, you can reply back here and I can send them.
I’m very interested in getting your plans. We’re doing a youth conference with a super hero theme, so we’re looking for a way to construct a city skyline.
I would love to see the plans for this project. I want to do a scaled down version of it for our church play in December. Last year, we had an awesome set, (geared more towards a variety show atmosphere, but this year we need a more literal set for the basis of our play. I’m not undestanding what a vector illustrator is, could you explain?—Please send the plans via email when you get a chance! Thanks, Terri
