Bright and Cheery Living Room

Travis Carpenter from Northview Church in Carmel, IN brings us this living room look.(Originally posted December 2013)

For their 2013 Spiritual Growth Campaign they did a series called “The Journey Home” created by Crossroads in Cincinnati, OH. The entire theme of the series was centered around an old school retro, warm feel that was designed to give the idea of being home. For their staging, they decided to follow suit. They wanted to create an environment that felt warm and welcoming.

They ultimately decided on created a living room set, with an actual living room that could be used during services. They built two rear projections screens into the stage to run their graphics during worship, as well as a 50″ plasma TV into the fireplace to run fireplace loops. The walls were built with 2x4s and were all screwed down into the stage floor to keep them in place. Each wall section was secured to its neighboring wall, and then the far ends were braced with some angled 2x4s. The walls were covered with simple wood paneling nailed up with finish nails. They also picked up some sconces and built them into the set which were controlled by dimmers.

The stripes on the walls were taken from the series graphics and were made with 2x8s.

Before starting construction, they created a 3D rendering of the set so that there was no confusion as to where they were going with the look.

All of the materials used can be found at local big box hardware stores (with the exception of the projection gear, of course).
