Stage Designs

Wood Screen

Robin Lear from Calvary Assembly of God in Dover, Delaware brings us this great pallet screen with typography on top.

This stage design was created for a Night of Worship, but will continue to be used until the Christmas Holidays. This design was inspired by all the pallet designs Robin has seen for the past couple of years. The actual sign was 8’x16′ on two 8×8 frames attached together. All the wood was reclaimed from pallets, except the 2×4’s for the frame. Robin created the actual verbiage in Photoshop and had a sign shop create the words for them. It was made out of foam board. They installed it using stand offs because of the depth it brought to the actual sign. Because of the sheer size of this sign, they had to purchase two 2-ton winches to support the weight. They were attached to an I beam. The edison light fixtures were created by drilling holes in a 2×8 sheet of plywood and adjusting the lights to create a rainfall effect. There were about 28 lights in each fixture. All the wires were daisy chained together to make it 1 fixture which could be controlled from the sound booth. Once they got the lengths right, they flipped the board and used it as a template to drill holes into the other piece of wood that created a mirror image. Approximate cost of this project was around $1200, which included 2 electric winches, the 2x4s, 1 sheet of plywood, the braided electric wire, sockets and bulbs. The pallets were free.

Curious if you have a link for the light bulbs?

    • Robin Lear says:

Hi Kimberly. Yes I do have the link: http://www.feit.com/LED_Lamps/Vintage_Incandescent
You can find this brand at Lowe’s and Home Depot. We actually bought them from a local lighting store because they were so much cheaper than at the big box stores. I would highly recommend that you to shop around for the best price. Seems to be a pretty big range of prices out there! Good luck!

I’m currently remodeling an outdated, large Chapel to be our new youth facility. This lighting effect is exactly what I had in mind. Is there someone I could contact to ask questions about how the lighting was done? I’m the worship/student pastor at River of Life Church in Brandon, MS. Email would be sufficient.

Just wondering, what did you use to hang the light bulbs and how did you get them to work/plug in?

  4. Vicki Hunter says:

I LOVE the font you used for the word “worship”. do you recall what the font name is?

  5. Julie says:

Hi! Can you give me some feedback on how you hung your light bulbs? Were you able to control them with your light board?

    Thanks so much!

We painted a 4×8 piece of plywood black, drilled random holes all over it, then pulled string through at various lengths to create the effect we were looking for. We measured each string and replaced them with the electric wire with sockets and included additional length at the top so we could attach all the wires together. We daisy chained them all together so it could be controlled from the light board. We have 2 tracks about 3 feet apart suspended over the stage in the back of the stage. We attached carriers to the piece of plywood, 2 on the front for the front track, and 2 on the back for the back track. We did this so we could easily roll it off stage if we need to get it out of sight off stage.

Thank you soooo much for the reply! Sorry for all the questions.?We want to do some lights like this for Christmas and I just need to give my lighting guy a list of materials used.
Were u able to control them from your lighting board? Make them dim? What did u use to connect them to your board?
Thank you for your time! ?

Love the way the lights are hung. I’m doing something similar with barn wood…do you have link to the sockets and wiring you used? And I’m also curious if you ran all the lights into a portable dimmer or what. Thanks!

Love this backdrop!! What material is the wording made out of and how did you mount it to the wood? Thanks!

    • Robin Lear says:

I designed the words using photoshop and then took my design to a sign company.
They actually cut the letters out of 1/4″ foam board. They also provided stand offs that were attached to the back of the letters. We had a template that was provided by the sign company that showed exactly where the standoff would actually touch the wood background. We drilled holes in the wood just large enough to allow the screw coming off the back of the stand off to slightly insert in to the hole. There are probably other ways the letters could be hung but we wanted it to look like it was standing off the wood background. By the way, this sign shop just cut another sign for us, but used 1/2″ foam board. I would recommend this thickness over the 1/4″ one. This one was way more solid…way less fragile.

what as the name of the print shop that did that? or what did they charge?

        thanks in advance

Hi! We love this stage design and are about to change our church design to this one. Could you tell me how you hung the pallet board sign? I know it’s going to be really heavy so just trying to figure out the best/safest way to get it hung!

  8. Holly says:

I’m actually from Delaware and wondering what sign company you used. I need foam letters cut just like that and my sign company is saying they can’t do it except out of gatorboar which is much more pricey. Thanks…love your design!

    • Vicki says:

Holly – we used 1/2 inch, furniture grade plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. It worked well as we didn’t have any company that we could find to do that for us.

    • Robin Lear says:

Holly, we used Kent Signs in Dover, DE. If you have a projector you could project the image on foam board and use a scroll saw or band saw to cut it out.

  9. Can you tell me the brand/model of lighting fixtures you have in this picture?

  10. katelyn kenny says:

Do you by chance know about how much electrical wire you used? We are in the process of getting a budget together for something similar. Thank you!

  11. Haley says:

Do you know what size the fonts are?
