From Duncan: San Antonio Work Camp, hosted by MacArthur Park Church of Christ, is an annual collaboration of area youth ministries to paint houses for low income families in greater San Antonio during the day, then worship at night. This year’s theme was “The Shaping” so I designed the stage to change every day in keeping with each night’s lesson. I created a custom mask using Masker-Aid each day after the stage was rearranged, so I could map video content to the boxes during worship. Air Filter light towers housed 4 of the pars. The other four pars lit the boxes when they weren’t being projection mapped.
-For the first night, I stacked the boxes flush.
-For the second night, I shifted the boxes to give more of a 3D look and create texture for shadows. At the end of the speaker’s talk, he (intentionally) pulled down the wall.
-For the third night, I arranged the boxes to resemble rubble. I used LED tape to augment the design.
-For the fourth night, I made a cross out of 2x4s. I cut holes in the sides of the boxes and threaded onto the cross frame. I arranged LED tape on the bottom of the cross to provide subtle uplighting.
1. Boxes were shipped flat and assembled by interns
2. The design was inspired by the SALT Conference in 2013.
Duncan – fantastic. Really beautiful. I love how you changed this up daily! For the third night (“rubble”), I don’t see where the LED tape is positioned – how did you use it? I see on the corners of the boxes, it looks like there is dark tape – or did you create that look via mapping? Finally – you mentioned two projectors – did you stack them for brightness?
Again – really inspiring. I’d love to do something like this.
Hi Mark. The two projectors were mounted on a temporary truss towards the back of the room. I lined up the seam where the boxes met with the edges of the projectors so there wasn’t a need for edge blending. Yes, the effect on the edges of the boxes was just created with the mapping. It kinda gave it a window pane look. The pic of the LED tape didn’t get posted. I have a video of it; looks kind of lightning! Check out https://www.facebook.com/NBCOFCYOUTH to see it.
Hey Duncan,
This is AWESOME! Where are the projectors located??
Hi Clark,
Thanks! Projectors were on a temporary truss mounted from the ceiling toward the back of the room. I put the edges of the projectors right on a seam in the boxes so no need to edge blend.
This is so awesome. I saw the clips from salt ’13 .. cool that you changed up daily!
