Throwback: Stretch Grid

Mike Campbell from Esoteric Visions with CLife Church brings us this great grid of stretched fabric. (Originally posted April 2012)

Mike built these grids out of 2×4’s. Then he painted the frames/grids black. Then he grabbed some pieces of spandex and stretched them out between the frames.

He then used eighteen WDM 252LED Wash units to light each panel – individually controllable for effects and chases.

Looks cool! I like the individual grids. Are you purchasing the spandex from a local fabric store or are you buying it online? What is the size of the spandex that is used? Just getting into this whole stage design thing. Thanks for any info that you can give me.

This was purchased from a fabric store. It was fire treated after purchase. I recommend purchasing pre-treated fabric, but they purchased it for me. These were 1’x1′ pre-stretch.

  3. Mike says:

I believe they were 12’x12′ with the spacers evenly spaced.

How did you attach the spandex to the frames?

  5. Mike says:

We used staples. Using a star pattern and tape to reinforce the fabric where we stapled it so that it didn’t rip the fabric.
