Shattered Glass

Todd Otte from Mariner’s Church in Irvine, California used some simple materials in a creative way. Todd cut out some crazy shapes from MDF (medium-density fibreboard) and backed the pieces with some silver fabric. This created the wonderful silhouettes you see in the design. Original use was at Mariners Church, Irvine California 2008.

Todd, this is awesome but I know MDF is heavy, what thickness did you use?

    • Just got this response back from Todd:
All I did was screw small blocks of 1"x1" on the back of the 1/4 MDF and drilled two holes through these blocks and threaded it with steel cable. Under the blocks I used crimp ties on the steel cable to suspend the MDF and then painted the cable black so you cant see it… Really simple stuff … the rest is just lighting

how much does something like that cost?

    • Hey Robert! MDF costs about twice as much as particleboard. You can get it at a Home Depot…then the fabric is a few bucks/yard at a local fabric store.
      Hope that helps!

so how many panels stacked up, how tall did you make them?
What kind of lights did you use, are they on the floor or on the ceiling?
Did you paint the mdf black first?
was the design in the fabric or is it in the lights?

You said you “backed” the shapes with silver fabric. Did you mean “Faced”, as “on the front”? Also, what kind of silver fabric?
