Stage Designs

Scripted

Alex Armstrong from Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, GA brings us this scripty stage design.

The main backdrop was inspired by Joel Caron from Fielder Church in Arlington, TX. The crumpled backdrop was made from art craft paper. They ordered two 4′ wide 200′ long rolls of the paper. The leaning panels were made of Coroplast framed by 2×4’s. The crossbars of the leaning panels were gaff tape.

They added ten 2’2″x4′ and one 6’6″x10′ frosted acrylic panels of Scripture written in calligraphy in the activities center (where their modern worship services take place) and seven in the student center. Mary Wynn, who’s also on staff at Johnson Ferry, was the calligraphy artist. It took her about a week and a half to complete. She wrote out each panel with a black dry erase marker then traced it with paint. For the 6’6″x10′ piece of acrylic, she wrote out the verse on paper to how she wanted it, took a picture of it, projected it onto the acrylic and traced it out. In total, she made twenty-four 2’2″x4′ panels and one 6’6″x10′ piece.

The challenge they ran into with the frosted acrylic was that it was not frosted enough once lit. The solution was to add paper to the backside. It allowed the light to stay behind the panel, but yet gave the “light box effect” Alex desired.

Then they hung twelve 24″x36″ mission-type pictures in the activities center and eight in the student center.

Some of the volunteers who made it happen:
Aric Smith
JoAnna Cofer
Brenda Kirtley

Each piece of acrylic was lit with one Chauvet Colorado 1 Tour with diffusion gel and the large piece was three Chauvet Colorado Tri Tour 72 Baton’s. The crumpled paper was lit with nine Chauvet Colorado Tri Tour 72 Baton’s and each leaning panel has two Chauvet Colorado 1 Tours.

Alex, did you use CoroClear for the leaning panels? I love your visual use of scripture. Beautiful.

Beautiful execution. As a side note you can scuff up clear plex with a sander to achieve the frosted effect too.

Hey man I go to church in Moultrie and would love to come visit you guys one day and get a closer look at the stage. Think we could do that one day soon?

    Great set! Really like it.
Can you give any detail about the crumpled art craft paper? I’m considering using it in an upcoming design and I’m wondering if when you hung it you did anything to attach it together to the adjacent sheet or did you just overlap it a bit on each side and call it good? It’s hard to see that detail in the photos.

      Thank you, Doug!

Our back wall is made of plywood, so I was just able to overlap it a bit and staple it straight to the wall. Without stretching it back out too far, of course.
