Paneled Projection

John Falke from Fairfax Community Church in Fairfax, VA brings us this simple projection tiles on a budget.
John and his team used 4×8” sheets of white Coroplast with 4” black gaff tape to make the gaps between the square tiles and 2” black gaff tape on the edges of each Coroplast sheet so they could be lined up next to each other and maintain the 4” gap. They used a total of 6 sheets of Coroplast, each with twelve tiles that were 12×12” each.

They mounted the Coroplast sheets vertically by screwing them into several grids made out of 2×4’s that they already had. The grids were approximately 7×7’ painted black with a supporting brace in the center that they placed a couple of sandbags on.

They used Hitachi ultra-short throw projectors that were placed on the ground in front of each 8’ wide section (two Coroplast sheets). Each section was about 8′ wide and 6′ tall. Since they were using three Hitachi CP-A301N ultra short throw projectors, they drapped off about the bottom 2’ of the Coroplast with black duvetyne so that the extra Coroplast that wouldn’t have projection was hidden.

They used an MVD20X 6-output multi-viewer that allowed them to use 4 outputs from a single computer, much like the Matrox Dual/TripleHead2Go gives you 2/3 outputs. This allowed them to connect the three ultra short throw projectors as well as their main projectors and control the video visuals on all of the screens in the sanctuary from on computer. They were using Arkaos GrandVJ XT to control the visuals.

Since they already had the short throw projectors, MVD20X and the 2×4” black grids, the cost of the materials purchased (Coroplast and gaff tape) was about $300 to build this set.

Where did you get your MVD20X 6-output multi-viewer from?
