Mega Cross

Christian Nuckels from Weems Creek Baptist Church in Annapolis, MD brings us this very cool, large cross on their stage. (Originally posted August 2014)

When the Stage Design team at Weems Creek set out to create an engaging stage design to utilize their new lighting system, they began with the concept of a large, three dimensional cross in the center, flown from the pipe grid above the stage. To create the cross, the team mocked up a 3D frame in auto cad and cut 2X4s to the specified angles, then assembled the wooden frame using screws and L brackets then stretched cheap white fabric (layered in some areas for additional geometric variation) onto the front of the cross. The sides of the frame were covered in black weed guard that was left over from a previous project. The cross was then backlit with a mixture of Elation Opti QA Pars and ETC Vivid-R’s.

The towers were created using AC filters purchased online. These were duct taped together into cubes and stacked in a staggered fashion. The bases for the towers were made by simply cutting holes in the boxes that the AC filters were shipped in, and covering them with black weed guard. The towers were then up-lit with Elation Opti QA Pars.

Wood and Hardware: $250
Fabric: $50
Weed Guard: Free
AC Filters: $55
Duct Tape: $40
Total Design / Build / Install Time: Approximately 40 Man Hours

This looks great! Would you mind sharing the measurements and supplies for the cross to me as well? Also, I would be interested in learning more about how you lit the cross.

  4. Donnie says:

Is the back wall a simple wall with lights shining on it?

  5. Bryce says:

Hey! So our church trying doing the air filter light boxes. They look great but our lights don’t shine through so well. After the second box the light pretty much just disappears. We are using 100 watt LED lights. What type of lights do you all use?
