Stage Designs

Honeycomb

Mike TenHaken from Word Of Grace Community Church in Sheboygan Falls, WI brings us this honeycomb design. (Originally posted January 2013)

They made this design for their series “New”. The design consisted of ten hexagons equal in size, about 4 feet at their widest points. The middle hexagon was actually two hexagons made into a box with two open sides to let light shine in. Inside that particular hexagon box was tin foil lining to reflect the lights that shine in so that the word NEW illuminates. Doing this allowed Mike to create a surprise or mystery element to the stage design. During worship, the middle hexagon was not lit and once the message lighting came on the “NEW” hexagon almost glowed then changed to a subtle, warm, less distracting lit stage design for the message.

Each hexagon was made from 1-inch styrofoam. One was made into a box, four were cut to look like hexagon frames which include spandex stapled to the back, the other five are simply painted with a blackberry paint color and a ivory paint color. Each were hung from the ceiling with braided fishing line and lit from front and back.

Cost: ~$80

    Fantastic Set!
I have been using foam for a lot of my set and was wondering what you used to chain the hexagons together? What kind of anchor into the foam did you use? Also what lighting did you use?
    Thank you!

    • Mike says:

Thanks! The hexagons are chained together and anchored with coarse thread drywall screws. They’re light weight enough that the screw held. The lighting is simply elipsodials with different colored gels.

This is a well done idea. Do you get any movement at all in the hexagons with the air from your hvac system, or are they strung all the way to the floor?

    • Mike says:

Surprisingly enough, no. It seems to be heavy enough that it doesn’t move. they are not tied to the floor in any way.

I Love this design. It is really clean and simple, but looks super professional. Really creative use of materials and lighting. I may definitely be suggesting something like this for us very soon! Thanks for sharing.

I love this design. I’ve been looking to find places such as wal-mart and Home Depot to see if they have foam board but not sure if this is the product you are using. Where did you purchase your foam at?

    excellent!

IMHO, honeycomb looks cool but is very distracting in actual production on stage. @Terrance – a hexagon is – not – a simple shape
