Stage Lighting

Galaxy

Cameron Robbins from Victory Worship Center in Tucson, Arizona brings us this lighting concept from their youth room.

Here’s what Cameron says:
The design theme that I have been going for has been like a galaxy look, in the sense that it is all about the light. I don’t use any fabrics and I take extra time to make sure everything is black including the gear. I notice that sometimes it’s popular to show off gear but I don’t do that because I believe the lights and sound are there to set up an atmosphere for worship. Also having everything black makes the light beams have more presence. In this design I included par36 light banks (crowd blinders). It is our youth room so they do use them occasionally to give the audience a tan, but there main job is to give off an amber glow. One thing iv learned from my friend Daniel Connell the LD of church on the move is to have that amber glow in all my designs. It really helps with adding warmth to the look and goes great with dark blues and purples.

I realize that I am blessed with how fast our church has grown in the last 2 1/2 year and all the resources that come with that. I also understand that not all churches have that. What I can pass on is when you are buying fixture don’t be afraid to go used. I own 43 movers and only 6 of them I bought new. The 22 fixtures I bought for the new youth room I waited for tours to come to an end and bought the fixture off them. I was able to get 6 month old mac250 entours that normally are $2950 for $1900 each. I did the same with VL2000s and all the lights came with road cases for free.

Another big thing is when you do a big purchase of a few lights or more, go out of state. When you go out of state you don’t pay sales tax. With this last purchase I did it cost me $300 dollars more to ship it in from another state but I saved $6100 because there was no tax.

Great advice! Out of all the lights we’ve purchased in the last 5 years, none of them have been brand new. It’s a huge money-saver.

Lighting and stage looks really good. Love the concert feel.

I guess I’m a bit confused about the tax thing. Isn’t you church a non-profit? You shouldn’t pay tax on anything.

I second buying used… especially if your church isn’t printing their own money in one of the second floor Sundsay school rooms…

I was able.to purchase 6 cyberlights for our main room for $2400…

    Before buying used..
    -Are parts still readily available?
-Can I still get tech support for these fixtures?

I can still call Martin and get help with our 518s in our youth room, or order parts for my Studio Colors from Lightparts.com

    Great article

I am not sure what state you ‘re from but in Arizona we have to pay sales tax on all purchases. If you don’t have two thats awesome! and I’m jealous!

If your a church you shouldn’t have to pay sales tax on anything used in the church…you might ask the pastor if your set up as a non profit with your state or hold a 501 c 3 non profit status. We have bought lights…vans…gear…drums…guitars…etc tax free…but they all belong and stay at the church…just a thought!

This looks very nice. I love the layers that your design gives. What are you using for a console?

hey us at our church have started to upgrade and start to light up our stage, right now all we have are 12 led par 64 and our tress are full so we are looking at hanging them, we are thinking a large truss that goes the length of the stage that can be lowered so we can add more lights then lifted back up with a winch or something like that, so my question is 1 is this possible 2 where do i start and 3 any better ideals?, are goal is to have something that is going to last and be able to manage expansion? thanks for all the feedback:) feel free to email me if you want more info thanks

I love your designs. I was wondering if I might have permission to use a couple of your photos as backgrounds for some graphics I need to do for a charity. It will be called “The Love Offering Tour” and I need to design brochures, posters, a website header, etc. I will make changes to your photos so no one is recognizable. It would be a great help.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Can you tell me the depth of the stage?

  11. roman says:

Awesome thanks Cameron! Do you know the dimensions of the room?

  12. The room is a little weird. It held 1100 with a balcony but we walled in the underside of the balcony. It’s now 700 seat but its split level.

Church is tax exempt in every state and government regulated. Church never pays taxes or even files. This is the reason its so difficult getting “church status”. 501c3’s on the other hand are dependent upon state and federal laws.
