Josh Collesano from Woodside Bible Church in Troy, MI brings us these really cool curved wood panels. (Originally posted February 2015)
They started by ripping luan panels to make two 2×10′ panels. Here’s the rest of the process:
- Holes are drilled uniform 11.5″ in and 2.5″ in
- Used a 1 and 1/4″ paddle bit
- Laid each piece on its side and three people bent and fed pipe through one end and into and through the top end.
- They secured the pipe to a mic base by passing the 1/2″ pipe through the base and attaching a coupler underneath (large panels only)
- They attached a coupler to the top of each pipe just for good measure
- They then leveled each pipe piece before attaching the jack stand. Two screws from the front hold the jack stand nicely.
- They meticulously set the panels where they wanted and then used a shotbag (sandbag) for good measure
- Each panel ended up being 8.5′ tall with the bend. Their screen bottom was 9′. This meant you could use any length you wish but they needed height for their venue but knew they had to stay below 9′.
- The panels were up lit using 5 Elation DLED bars and each light bulb is on its own dimming circuit
Material list:
- 4×10 luan
- 1/2″ aluminum conduit
- 1/2″ conduit couplers
- Circular mic stand bases (for larger panels)
- 4’x2′ jack stands made of 2×4 or 1×3’s (one per panel)
- IKEA hanging light chords (optional)
- Light bulbs (optional)
- Black flat spray paint
Do you have any pictures of the back side of the set? In particular how the pipe couplers are attached and how they are mounted to stands.
shoot me an email and i’ll reply with some up close pictures.
Nice work, we are deciding what to do for our new church stage, your curved panels look so great!!! I would like, if you have some pictures of the back to see how they stand. Thanks for your time and sharing. God bless you.
Please send some close up pictures of the curved wood panels.

Looks great!
Classy.
is this 1/2″ luan? I normally use 1/4″ but i cant get the 10′ in 1/4″
I had a opportunity to visit this church the First weekend in March 2015. Very attractive design and easy to construct. I have suggest this concept at my home church. With lighting the panels can be very bold or very suttle.
I like the set, however I’m more interested in the fabric that’s hung on either side of the projection screen. I don’t see anything in the description about that. Could you tell me what it is??
