Chevron? More Like Chevright!

Tim Sherwood from Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa brings us these cool LED chevron shapes. (originally posted April 2015)

Tim saw something similar from Cross Point Church in Nashville and tried to recreate it for his purposes. The set pieces were made from 3 different materials. 1/4 inch luan for the faces. They used LED tape lighting to light them. The problem with the tape was that the throw of the light wasn’t very wide, so they needed to find a way to get it up above the space and aimed down in order to light the whole 6″ space. They used two different pieces of pine trim to do so. One was a simple wedge and the other was a outside corner piece.

The chevrons were 3 different sizes 8′ 7′ and a 6′ getting them lined up and spaced correctly wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be. They ended up laying them down on the floor and took their time with the spacing screwed them into the frames stood them up and they were still off. One of the sides was lifted up about 3″ with some carpet samples. There was a 30′ rule in stage design. If you cannot see it from 30′ away the flaw isn’t that bad.

All of the LED tape, accessories, and DMX decoder were purchased from Amazon.

Total cost for the design came in at $1700. $700 for the material cost and $1000 for the all of the lighting materials which can be reused in other future designs.

This looks so awesome! Were the strip lights mounted to both sides of each Chevron – so 2 strip lights per chevron or did one have the spread you needed?

    • Tim Sherwood says:

Nope just on one side. That is why we had to get them up above the void and at an angle to throw of the led just isn’t far enough to have them aimed straight across.

Hello, this looks great! , but , how you connect the led tape to the dmx decoder? what can we do to control the lights ? what conections we have to do and how?. as you can see, I have no idea LOL.

I hope not bother you with so many questions. thank you! jejeje
I will wait your answer! :)

That did’nt work, that link sends me to my amazon account. :L

I am curious as well as to how the LED tape connects in the DMX decoder. Also, how many DMX decoders did you have to use? Is it one per roll of tape?

  5. TIm Sherwood says:

I will take a better picture of the unit so you can see. Basically when you get the led tape there is a plug on one end that attaches to another plug with open wires on one end to insert into the decoder then you assign your address with the dip switch setup and use your dmx cables in the dmx in and out. I am sure that is clear as mud :-/ Dustin we did end up using one decoder per unit that gave us the most versatility. the decoder we use will run up to 60′ of tape

Yeah can you show how you connected the LED strips to the decoder.

Also are those LED strips good quality because they are extremely cheep?

  7. Abi says:

Yes, could you please show/tell us how the strips connected to the DMX controller? Also, how many channels did you end up using? Did you daisy chain every other one so you’d have two colors, so two channels? Thanks.

What did you power the lights with? I’m looking at the LED strips and DMX decoder you linked to on Amazon, but am a little confused on how I need to power them.

As I am looking to dive into a project like this as well, I found on the other page:
    https://churchstagedesignideas.com/flagged/

in the comments there is talk about power for the LED strips. The discussion talks about if it is just a few strips, they use “wall warts” (AC adapter). If the project is bigger, then they use something like this (a dedicated power supply):

    Hope that helps…

how wide is the 1/4 luan? Was the wedge a pre-made piece?
