They created a rolling stone in front of a rocky background that “Jesus” could emerge from. To create this set he and his crew used cardboard with sand glued all over it. He added leaves around the set to give it a more organic look.

The rolling stone has recycled plywood as its structure (covered with the same cardboard, glue and sand mixture).

The three crosses were made from simple 2″×4″′s with translucent fabric stapled on the backs. (Cross dimensions were 3′x6′ (x2) and 3′x7′.)

They used a stage LED light bar on the ground behind each frame to provide back lighting. During the service, they changed the light color of the crosses to match the ProPresenter backgrounds on the screen.

Being in a theater, Jeremy had to modify the crosses a bit. They needed them to be portable and to tilt back about six to eight inches, facing the crowd, instead of just the front row. So Jeremy created a separate back piece with two J hooks at the top. These hooks latched into holes at the top back edge of the crosses.

The back pieces were sheets of plywood painted black and were the same size as the corresponding cross. These pieces has a 2″x4″ attached in the center to keep them straight. Basically, they stood like an A frame when looking at them from the side.

To create this set they stretched spandex squares between trusses. Then they put three crosses made of styrofoam behind the spandex so they could get the silhouettes. If they front lit, they would disappear. Backlit…appear. They used red and purple gels to wash the stage.

They wanted a design that could be left up afte Easter, so they had an artist in their church draw some pictures on reworked pieces from a previous design. Then they created two columns in the corners. They constructed the frames from wood and stretched large pieces of stretch-fabric around them. They placed a light inside each column with a mirror on the opposite side of the column–to reflect the light.

In 2010, instead of renting a large lighting rig like they’ve previously done, they rented projectors (DL.3s). They mapped video across the entire front half of the sanctuary. They also added fabric swags to create areas to project and to bring the look into the room. Most of this could be done on a small budget using a Mac, a TripleHead2Go, and some extra projectors.

The actual design came from Marty Taylor (their technical Director) and Daniel Parks (on of their congregants that designs sets as a professio). Steven was mostly involved in assembly and lighting it.

The grassy towers are wooden structures (similar to a truss pattern) with cut-out styrene shapes attached. The shapes were painted in 3 shades of green…applied to make a green gradient.

The fabric trellis in the background is basically large white linen sheets that were braided to make the pattern.

For the cross, they rented some chrome truss and LED’s to create a 20′x15′ cross in the center of the stage.

Frames were build and canvas was stretched over to create these banners. Then, using a video projector they sketched the text onto the canvas then painted them.
