Broken Bubbles

Brent Allan from Northland Church in Longwood, FL brings us this ModScenes stage design. (originally posted September 2016)

For the pirate ship theme in their Children’s Worship Wing, they wanted a design based on the theme of bubbles. Steven Hall of ModScenes was able to provide them with a set that suited what they were looking for. They ended up creating six columns that were two pieces wide by nine pieces tall (each piece consisted of two U shapes that were a little under 2′ square). They left some pieces out of the columns randomly to create a slightly more abstract feel. They connected those gaps with black tie line to keep the columns structurally sound. The background was a black curtain over which they hung blue lava fabric that they had from a previous set. They also hung the set about 10 inches out from the backdrop to create more of a sense of depth. The set was all able to be built and installed in one 8-hour day by three people.

What is lava fabric and where can I get it? It looks super cool and like it would play with light really well.
